I hate to generalize about a fan base, but this is why Boston fans generally bug me--like, did those 17,000+ people not realize that Seguin didn't ask to be traded and it was completely out of his control? Why would you boo him mercilessly?

I totally agree. I can see them booing Kessel because he wanted to be traded but that would be like Toronto booing Rask (even though he was a prospect at the time) as there was no fault of his own for being traded.

Seguin was completely invisible for the entire playoffs last year and had plenty of "off ice" issues. Those things are under his control. I think it was lame to boo Seguin but he did give management reasons to explore trading him.

i agree with you, but it may also have to do with the fact that he didn't live up to the hype around here and his off ice problems probably would have been tolerated if he was the 40 goal scorer that "experts" said he would be. Like the pro scout in "Behind the B" said, the bruins time to win is now with the core they have, they didn't need to be babysitting. Then there are people out there who say "but he was 21! cut him some slack", sure, but he is still an adult playing PROfessional hockey and was set to make over 5 million a year. It's in the past so its time to move on, the bruins have plenty of young talent for the future, didn't exactly want seguin being the veteran leader for those guys.

man, all, or most, fan bases act that way. It's ribbing from a fan base to an opposing team... nothing too crazy. Im sure not ONLY Boston fans boo opposing players that once played for them lol

and there was a lot of resent between Boston fans and Seguin for the last year or more he was a Bruin, so it was expected. There was no booing for Peverly, as he was a consummate pro while in BOS

The worst part is that Seguin may have been their best player in the 2012 series loss to the Caps, he had a hand injury that required surgery but he was battling and scored a couple very important goals.

they moved way too fast on that.
fact is Seguin was the best player in that deal, good as Loui Eriksson is.
i think Boston will come to regret that deal.

Seguin was never going to be a Top 6 Centre, which he needs to be. He's not better all around then Bergeron nor Krejci so it made sense. Why keep him as a 3rd Line C or 2nd Line RW for the next 5-6 years and not get full potential when yu can make a deal, get good pieces like Loui and Smith as well as 2 good players in the Minors. makes complete sense from a full hockey standpoint rather then just this guy is good so they should have kept him.

Meh ... the notion is the team that gets the best player "wins". Phil was the "best" player in his deal, B's wound up with the cup. B's pride themselves on their team culture, if a guy doesn't buy in, they toss him ... it's worked out pretty well for them so far.

I didn't mind trading Seguin, but only if the deal was so incredible that they had to do it. The deal they made was not that incredible, and it screams of the best deal they could get making sure it was a West Conf. team and really wanting to get rid of Seguin. I have to think whatever was going on, drove them to trade Seguin knowing in the long run they might "lose" on the deal.

cough, he got a standing ovation that lasted a few minutes and left him in tears, cough

To be fair though, what Seguin did for the Bruins is not even in the same galaxy as Sundin's contributions and legacy. So, it's not fair to Seguin to compare their receptions when they came back to their teams.

I get what everyone's saying regarding Seguin having high expectations and potential and not doing his part to live up to it for the Bruins and their fan base, but it still bums me out that he would get that much vitriol and hate directed towards him. And I'm saying that as a Leafs fan that doesn't like the kid, so....

Honestly, I didn't watch the game and was going completely based off of Ty's article where he says this:

But tonight, those same fans at the Garden, 17,565 strong, let their voices be heard, and booed the absolute hell out of the player they certainly praised in the previous three seasons.

Booing the 21-year-old Bruin-turned-Star with each touch of the puck tonight...

That made it sound like it was a pretty terrible homecoming for Seguin, so my apologies if the source was inaccurate.

I have a completely different impression of Boston fans.

My wife and I went to Boston last year to watch a Jays game in which Boston was destroyed 15-6 and even after the clobbering, the Sox fans were awesome. Despite the fact that we were decked out in our Jays gear, we met a lot of good people on that trip an no one gave us a rough time at all. After the ball game, we went to a bar and ended up talking hockey with some Bruins fans. We admitted that we were Leaf/Canucks fans and still, everyone was great to deal with. I few light hearted jabs back and forth but we ended up meeting some new friends over a few pints. We went in expecting the worst but ended up quite surprised on how classy the fans were. Had the same treatment in Chicago while watching a Canucks game a few years back as well.

I agree. Boston fans were great. I went for a leafs game a few years ago, and as much as there is a rivalry between the bruins / leafs, most bruins fans were focused on hating the habs/sabres. The leafs and b's play a similar honest brutal style, so i respect boston.

Still want to compare Seguin and Sundin's reception? I wasn't trying to because it's not fair to Seguin, but if you insist...
